The omega-3 PUFA's (poly unsaturated fatty acids) are essential for the normal development of larval fish and shrimp, but most of the commonly available strains of rotifers and Artemia nauplii have only a very small amount of these omega-3 PUFA's and for this reason, it is common practice in the aquaculture industry to enrich the rotifers and Artemia nauplii with omega-3 PUFA's before feeding the rotifers and Artemia nauplii to larval fish and shrimp in hatcheries. As the solution to this problem, our "Power Omega" contains a significant portion of omega-3 PUFA's as DHA (35-40% of total fatty acids) and EPA (20-25% of total fatty acids) as well as vitamin A, D3, E and C. The Asta Omega is easily swallowed and digested by the rotifers and Artemia nauplii since it is a self-emulsified oil type which is easily mixed with water in the farming tank. Astaxanthin is a carotenoid pigment, is quite common in nature, especially in the marine environment and is probably best known for eliciting the pinkish-red hue to the flesh of Sea Bream, salmon and trout, as well as shrimp, lobsters and crayfish. Astaxanthin surpasses the antioxidant benefits of carotene, zeaxanthin, canthaxanthin, vitamin C and vitamin E. Astaxanthin is approximately 10 times stronger than other carotenoids, including carotene, in terms of antioxidant activity and 100 times greater than vitamin E (alpha-tocopherol). Carotenoids are essential nutrients that should be included in all aquatic diets at a minimum level of 10 ppm. It appears the broader roles of astaxanthin include functions as an antioxidant and provitamin A, enhancing immune response, reproduction, growth, maturation and photoprotection of eggs. Astaxanthin also shows strong activity as an inhibitor of lipid peroxidation mediated by active forms of oxygen and has been proposed as the "super vitamin E". Furthermore, fish are unable to synthesize astaxanthin de novo, only plants and protists (bacteria, algae, fungi) are capable of synthesizing carotenoids, therefore the pigment must be available in either their native habitat or manufactured diet. Our enrichment product named "Asta Omega" contains minimum 70% omega-3 PUFA's of total fatty acids and Astaxanthin as well as vitamin A, D3, E and C.
